Fox & Ziepfel, LLC’s offices are conveniently located in the historic residence of Captain Phil Rothenbush. Like other brave Ohioans, Capt. Rothenbush enlisted following President Lincoln’s call for 75,000 volunteers from nearly every state in the Union. Capt. Rothenbush served with the 35th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in military campaigns throughout the South, including clashes in Corinth, Mississippi; Perryville, Kentucky; Tullahoma, Tennessee; Chickamauga, Georgia; Mission Ridge, Tennessee; Buzzard Roost, Georgia; Dalton, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia; Pine Mountain, Georgia; Pine Knob, Georgia; and Peachtree Creek, Georgia.
During his company’s campaign on the Chickamauga Battlefield, a skirmish that historians say involved around 125,000 soldiers, Capt. Rothenbush was wounded on three separate occasions. As a tribute to his sacrificial military service, the historic structure was built for Capt. Rothenbush’s family after he was wounded.
Upon returning to Southwest Ohio following his service, Capt. Rothenbush became a well-regarded merchant, opening his first store in 1868 at the corner of Front and High Streets. In a profile describing leading business leaders of his time, The Republican-News had this to say: “There is no man in Hamilton better known or more respected than Captain Philip Rothenbush.”
